Almeria: the Wild West

Before arriving at Taverns, located municipal term in the north of Almeria, we see show on the hill its impressive Castle, loaded nazarí strength of history where the capitulations were signed that put these earth into the hands of the catholic kings per 1489 there. Adapted to a little propitious land, nowadays it is property of the City council of Taverns and you can cross it, and admire it, gratuitously. Partially already recovered after years of abandonment, it was declared well of cultural interest in 1949.

But what it has made of Taverns a place internationally known is its spectacular Desert, that rests between the Mountain range of Filabres and the Mountain range of Alhamilla, and in 1989 was named Place Natural. Although it is the only desert zone of all Europe, its fame comes to him for being decorated natural in the running of many films. With an extension of 280 km2, their barren landscape has turned to this zone ideal scene of westerns and American overproductions. As examples we can mention “the good one, ugly and the bad one”, carried out by Clint Eastwood in 1966; or “Indiana crossed Jones and the last one”, of 1989, who all we know. And it is that they are his towns styles the American west an irresistible hook for the cinéfilos. We can visit “Mini-Hollywood “, that, constructed in years 60, count on the typical Saloon, dangerous forajidos collection point of and gunmen; strolls in diligences and until an office of the Sheriff. All this completes with stores of souvenirs and theater representations made by specialists, in which mounts to horse, go off to an a others and they are sent from the dusty tile roofs. Here we found, in addition, the fascinating zoological park “Oasys “, that lodges more than 170 species animals of different parts from the world.

Another town that will make the delights of greater children and is the Western Leone, who takes the name of the director of so many Westerns Spaghetti filmed here. Finally, it is not necessary to let visit the Texas-Hollywood, that fué specially constructed for the film “the death has a price” in 1963. This one is greatest of all thanks to that it includes, aside from the typical city of the West, the Brave Fort, a Mexican town and another Indian. Also it counts Taverns with a Circuit of Speed, to about 10 kms of the locality and near the towns before mentioned, for the lovers of the races of motos. By all means, we can decide to spend a calm day in the same town, where the life rate is calmed except Wednesdays of swap-meet. There we can visit the Church of Our Lady of the Incarnation, of style to mudéjar delayed, constructed in year 1.505; the Hermitage of San Sebastián, dedicated to the pattern of the town; or the Hermitage of Our Lady of Angustias, that, constructed on a cemetery, was raised between centuries XVIII and XIX. Taverns are, without a doubt, a place that is worth the trouble to visit…
