Duero River: Two countries, one river

The Duero River is famous in Spain, it is also called The Douro River in Portugal. This specific river travels through both countries and even serves as a border in one of it´s areas. It is the third most longest river in the peninsula and it is 897 kilometres in length which broken down mean 527 km are located in Spanish territory, 213 km in Portugal and 112 km that serve as a border.

The Duero River is extremely important especially because it influences in Spanish and Portuguese culture, tradition, food and it is also a developing aid to both countries. It serves as a way to communicated between both countries and it is also has beautiful scenery. This river starts out in the “Picos de Urbión” in the Soria province then it pases through other provinces such as Burgos, Valladolid, Zamora, and Salamanca located in the Community of Castilla y León in Spain.

Both countries benefit from this river especially because it contains so much history and beauty. It is around 60 different municipalities that this river runs through. The beauty of this river is all the different bridges that cross over it. Such as bridges made in roman ages and other styles. The Duero River helps wine makers especially because the weather near a river is damp and moist helping wine mature slowly. This helps both countries.

In Portugal the Douro River is able to have boats navigate through it´s waters which helps people transport goods to other locations. Due to tourism there are small cruise ships that take trips through the Duero River so that they too are able to see and admire it´s beauty. The trip ends just before the river ends were it goes into the Atlantic Ocean.

The Duero River receives waters from other rivers such as the Elsa, Valderaduey, Pisuerga, Agueda, Yeltes and Tormes Rivers located in Spain. On the other hand in Portugal it is the Támega River. This is truly a beautiful trip to see and plan. Make your day and plan a trip to magical Spain!
