Strolling through the Cathedral of Murcia

Saint Mary´s Cathedral also known as the Cathedral of Murcia is part of the Cartagena diocese of Spain. It is located in the ancient city of Murcia. This particular cathedral was built in the 13th century on top of the then most popular Arab mosque. In 1385 the foundations of the Cathedral were built and in 1388 the first block was placed. Until 1394 construction went underway and it was finished on October 1467.

MUCatedral

There have been many renovations going on in the church for many centuries which makes it a very eclectic cathedral due to the various time periods it was built in. In the center of the church Alfonso X “The Knowledgable” left his heart as a proof of love to the city of Murcia.

During the XV and XVI century the chapels were built. During this contruction famous architects were a part of this such as Alfonso Gil, Diego Sánchez de Almazán, Jerónimo Quijano, Francisco and Jacobo Florentino. These chapels are mainly gothic mixed with a baroque style.
